Phonics

We teach phonics as the main strategy for reading in the Foundation Stage and this is further reinforced throughout the school. In Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, children are taught phonics in a daily 20-30 minute session, which follows the Letters and Sounds programme, enhanced by using our own Westbourne actions.

All individual and group reading books match a child’s phonic knowledge, ensuring children can decode all of the words.

“Phonics is the ladder the reader climbs, only to kick it away once it has been surmounted… Phonics requires the reader to process every letter”

– Nicholas Bielby
